Adding hours and minutes is not like regular addition. You can't simply add 2:45 + 1:30 = 3:75 โ there are only 60 minutes in an hour. The correct result is 4:15 (carry 60 minutes as 1 hour).
Steps: (1) Add minutes: 45 + 30 = 75. (2) If over 60, subtract 60 and carry 1 hour: 75 - 60 = 15 minutes, carry 1. (3) Add hours: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Result: 4 hours 15 minutes.
For payroll calculations, time is often expressed as decimal hours. Convert by dividing minutes by 60. Working 8 hours 45 minutes = 8 + (45/60) = 8.75 hours. Multiply by your hourly rate: 8.75 ร $20/hour = $175.
